Walmart supports area seniors 2016

Hot Springs, Ark., Sept. 20, 2016 – Today, Project HOPE Food Bank, Inc. received a $33,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation’s  State  Giving  Pro gra m  to assist seniors struggling with food insecurity. The program focuses on providing food to seniors to close the nutritional gaps caused by food insecurity. This grant will positively impact communities throughout west central Arkansas by providing senior emergency food boxes. The food bank partners with agencies, professional counselors, and case workers serving seniors to identify and distribute the food boxes. The agencies include area crisis centers, rural pantries, cancer centers, senior care agencies and veteran’s programs.

“It is an honor and privilege to partner with the Walmart State Giving Foundation to serve seniors in need,”
said Ted Thompson, Executive Director. “Through Walmart’s support this program has provided over
100,000 nutritious meals to hungry seniors.”

The grant was presented to L. Thomas Jones, Board President and Ted Thompson, Executive Director during a check presentation ceremony held today at Project HOPE Food Bank.

“At the Walmart Foundation, we understand that organizations such as Project HOPE Food Bank are

essential to building stronger communities. They share our values and are committed to helping seniors in need live better,” said Richard Mays, Walmart Neighborhood Market Store Manager. “Through this donation, we are hopeful that seniors within west central Arkansas will have access to healthy foods.”

The Walmart Senior Emergency Food Box was established in 2013 and has served emergency food to 3,300 senior households. Currently we partner with 18 agencies to distribute the food boxes throughout eight Arkansas counties. The food boxes contain canned fruits, vegetables and meats. A variety of grain products are included like oatmeal, cereals, rice, pasta and whole grain breakfast bars. Easily prepared and readily
consumable dinners are also included.  Because hydration is so important in a senior’s diet the boxes include milk, coffee and tea.

The Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program supports organizations that create opportunities so people can live better, awarding grants that have a long-lasting, positive impact on communities across the U.S.

To be considered for support, prospective grantee organizations must submit applications through the
Walmart Foundation State Giving Program’s online grant application. Applicants must have a current
501(c)(3) tax-exempt status in order to meet the program’s minimum eligibility criteria. Additional information about the program’s funding guidelines and application process are available online at www.walmartfoundation.org/stategiving.
