United Way of the Ouachitas Partners with
Project HOPE Food Bank
To help alleviate hunger the United Way of the Ouachitas granted Project HOPE Food Bank (PHFB) funding to assist the Food Subsidy Program. The Food Subsidy Program supplied food for 64,000 pantry visits aiding 85,000 adults and 52,578 children. The adults served include seniors over the age of 60. Seniors represent almost a third of returning pantry visits. Our partnering feeding programs served over 352,000 meals.
PHFB’s forty-five non-profit partners agencies include: children’s homes and feeding programs, homeless shelters, crisis centers, charity kitchens, school programs and faith based and community pantries, will benefit from the grant. The funding will be used as a food subsidy to assist our partners to be able to reach out to more people in need.
The Food Subsidy Program operates as a pooling of resources. The food bank purchases food wholesale in large lots usually 7-8 pallets at a time. In this manner, we can obtain a large quantity of food at an affordable price. PHFB then seeks grants and donations to subsidize the wholesale food prices. Agencies then have an opportunity to purchase food at substantially reduced prices, often doubling their purchasing power.
Those struggling with hunger often have additional challenges including: transportation and transportation cost, waning health and mobility issues. Partnering with agencies throughout our county allows better access to food for those living in rural areas and in our inner-city.
United Way of the Ouachitas is a cherished partner in Project HOPE Food Bank’s fight against hunger. The United Way has been serving the Hot Springs region since it was organized in 1917. Part of their focus is improving the lives of children in our community. In addition to providing grants, the United Way sponsors informative training and lectures. These events bring non-profits together to collaborate and find more efficient and effective means of providing the greatest impact on those in need in our community. The trainings also help non-profits with fund raising and grant preparation.
